Scrivens Opticians has always helped charities though the years but we are proud to announce our first official partnership with the Alzheimer’s Society for 2015, 2016 and 2017.

100,000 people develop dementia every year having an impact on many people. In the UK alone, 830,000 people suffer with dementia and around 23 million of the UK population have a close friend or family member with dementia. Not only is this a worthwhile charity to support from a fundraising perspective but it is something close to our hearts.

According to several other major studies, hearing loss could also be an early warning sign for dementia. The study, carried out by researchers from the John Hopkins School of Medicine and other research institutions in the US found that those with a hearing loss are more likely to develop dementia. Further research is now being conducted to find whether hearing aids can delay or even prevent dementia.

 About Alzheimer’s Society

Alzheimer’s Society is a membership organisation and a leading support and research charity for people with Dementia, their families and carers. It is the largest and oldest Dementia charity in the UK. Thirty years of work has given Alzheimer’s Society the experience needed to continuously develop and improve its services and with 230 branches and a strong central organisation, Alzheimer’s Society provides services that are supported nationally with a flexibility to meet local needs.

Scrivens Sets Sights on Support for Alzheimer's Society

Birmingham based Scrivens Opticians & Hearing Care has raised more than £16,000 for its charity of the year Alzheimer’s Society and is to support the cause for a third successive year in 2017.

Last year’s bumper sum brings the total collected so far to £28,700 as the family firm’s network of 177 branches got behind the charity to raise funds and awareness.

Cake sales, themed days, sponsored runs and cycle rides, plus a national competition for children to design a pair of glasses, were among the engaging activities used and proved a big hit.

Chairman Nicholas Georgevic said: “The response has been fantastic and has really touched a chord. We have developed close links with Alzheimer’s Society since we adopted it as our charity of the year in 2015 and we were keen to continue the partnership.

“There is growing evidence of a link between hearing loss and dementia, including Alzheimer’s, and as dementia affects so many people there is an increasing need for help and care.”

3 Peaks Challenge

Dispensing optician Amy Roe and optometrist Rachel Ogden will test their stamina and fitness in aid of Alzheimer’s Society on Saturday 25 July.

They hope to raise at least £250 each by climbing three mountains, Pen-y-Ghent (694m) Whernside (736m) and Ingleborough (723m) covering a distance of around 24 miles during the day.

Amy said: “Alzheimer’s Society is Scrivens’ principal charity this year and we wanted to do something special for it. We’ve never done anything like this before and we know it will be tough but we’re looking forward to it.

Rachel added: “I am a keen runner and Amy has been doing plenty of practising. It is an organised event and we will support and encourage each other to help us complete the challenge within the 12 hours target.”

Both women know that conquering the three peaks in the Yorkshire Dales is no mean feat as the steep climbs and descents will be physically demanding, albeit in stunning scenery.

10K Memory Walk

Marie Sanders is a woman with a focus on walking for hundreds of miles to raise money and awareness for the Alzheimer’s Society.

The 46-year-old manager of Scrivens Opticians & Hearing Care in Fakenham simply loves a challenge and this year will take on not one but FOUR 100 kilometre walks for the cause.

She explained: “It all started when I did a 10K Memory Walk for Alzheimer’s Society in 2013. It took me just over an hour to do and I thought I could do something more challenging. I found out about the 100k ultra challenges and decided to give them a go.

Marie has a personal reason for getting involved in such testing feats of endurance. Her father, who is 78, has dementia and the father of a colleague has Alzheimer’s.
