The importance of eye tests

Regular eye tests are essential for maintaining good eye health. They not only check vision but also detect potential eye conditions early on, enabling timely intervention. Ensuring you have an up-to-date prescription means that we can offer the best solution for clear and comfortable vision.

Additionally, eye tests can reveal broader health issues like diabetes and hypertension. Booking in for regular eye tests is a proactive step towards long-term visual health and an improved quality of life.

Free NHS eye tests

Our services include both private and free NHS funded eye tests. If you’re wondering whether you qualify for a free NHS eye test, we’ve got you covered.

The NHS covers the full cost of an eye test for eligible individuals and in some cases, provides an optical voucher towards the cost of glasses or contact lenses.

Adults over 60 and children aged under 16, or 19 and in full time education, are automatically eligible. If you fall into categories such as being aged 40 or over with a close relative with glaucoma, having diabetes or glaucoma, or receiving certain benefits, you may qualify for a free eye test at Scrivens Opticians.

Protecting your eyes from the sun

Did you know your eyes can be harmed by UV light, just like your skin? It’s crucial to protect your eyes in bright sunlight, and our sunglasses offer full UV protection.

They can even be tailored to your prescription. Alternatively, you can opt for tinted lenses in any of our standard frames or choose the versatility of light intelligent lenses, such as Transitions GenS, that react to automatically adjust to UV light. The choice is yours.

Your family’s eye health history

If certain eye conditions run in your family, the best way to take care of your eyes is by scheduling regular check-ups, especially as you get older. We recommend children have an eye test before they start school.

Our experienced Optometrists use advanced technology to conduct thorough eye examinations, identifying potential issues early on. Catching the signs of an eye condition early on can lead to timely treatment, preserving the quality of your vision for as long as possible.

What are the common eye health symptoms that I should be concerned about?

Common symptoms of poor eye health include blurred or double vision, frequent headaches, difficulty focusing, eye strain, sensitivity to light, and changes in colour perception. Other indicators may involve seeing halos around lights, persistent redness, or discomfort. If you experience any of these symptoms, it is crucial to seek prompt attention from an eye care professional. Regular eye tests play a vital role in maintaining good eye health and detecting potential issues early on, even in the absence of noticeable symptoms. Learn more here.

How often should you have an eye test?

Scrivens recommends that adults have their eyes tested every two years – even if they do not need glasses, or have any known eye conditions. Our Optometrists may request to see you more regularly depending on your individual  eye care needs. Children aged 16 and under and adults over 70 should have their eyes tested once a year. Regular check-ups can detect any changes to your vision, as well as any potential underlying issues.
