A balanced approach to keeping fit and healthy goes for looking after your eyes too. It’s important to take steps to look after this vital sense and not take it for granted.
Here are some top tips to keep sight of what we can do to maintain healthy eyes.
Screen breaks: Technology has changed our world but don’t let it rule yours. It’s advisable to take frequent short screen breaks if working on a computer or laptop as it can make your eyes feel tired and lead to headaches, itchy eyes and difficulty focusing. So pause and look at something else and blink your eyes now and again.
Sun smart: Whatever the time of year, invest in a pair of quality sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun as prolonged exposure to UV light can contribute to a number of eye health conditions such as macular degeneration and cataracts. Wearing protective eyewear for certain work and sporting activity makes sense as well.
Eat well: It’s not only carrots that are good for our eyes, think dark green leafy vegetables, fish and almonds too. A balanced diet that aids good vision is best created with a variety of proteins, dairy, fruits, and vegetables.
Keep it clean: Always wash your hands before you touch your eyes or remove lenses. It’s good practice to remove eye make-up completely before going to bed no matter how tired you feel.
Sleep: It’s important to rest your eyes after a long day. Try to get eight hours sleep. It also helps if you switch off your gadgets 30 minutes before going to sleep.
Finally, don’t forget to have regular eye tests and if you have any concerns about your eye health please seek professional advice.
