I can not reccomended any other opticians over Scrivens Colchester.

After many issues with Boots and Specsavers, I turned to Scrivens who treated me with respect, dignity, and as a person rather than a wallet.

They were trying to help me with an issue regarding Boots for about a month and kept me updated weekly. All staff are friendly and easily approachable.

The selection is significantly smaller than local competitors, but I'll take that any day over the irritation of dealing with said competitors.

I will be coming back for my next eye test.

On entering, the person at reception was very friendly. The environment was quiet with not too many people. The optician was very informative and did a thorough check of my eyes giving information as to signs to look for in case of changes to vision. There was no rush in choosing a glasses and the reception personnel aided which made it easier. I'm definitely returning to Scriven for my yearly eye test. Best experience ever....

I had a very poor experience with Scrivens Opticians in Colchester in April 2026.

I attended on 9 April 2026 because I had minor difficulty reading road signs at distance. My old glasses were later shown to be around -0.50 with no cylinder, but Scrivens prescribed a much stronger cylinder-based prescription: Plano / -1.25 in both eyes. After using glasses made to that prescription, I suffered nausea and dizziness.

I returned on 14 April 2026 and the prescription changed again to Plano / -1.00 with different axis values. My PD was also handled inconsistently. When I asked for it, I was told they were not obliged to tell me, but later staff measured it as 70 mm. Later evidence showed conflicting PD figures, and Asda later confirmed my PD as 68 mm.

I attended again on 16 April 2026 expecting a further re-test, but I was not re-examined and left without proper resolution.

A later Asda eye test on 20 April 2026 gave a materially different prescription that was much closer to my longstanding baseline, and also identified allergy-related symptoms which improved quickly after Cetirizine.

I made a formal complaint, but Scrivens rejected it. Based on my experience, I would not recommend this branch.

I am so pleased with the help and support I had at scrivens Colchester. I had to get new glasses as I’ve recently been diagnosed with Irlens syndrome and so needed a particular type of lense for my frames. The team were so helpful and considerate with me. I will definitely be switching from my usual opticians and using Scrivens from now on. I popped in to the Colchester branch . To look for replacements for the glasses i had lost The staff were very engaging and check my records and realised my eye test was overdue. I explained, I was on jury service for the next few weeks , they very kindly fitted me in straight away .
With the help of the manager I chose two new pairs, after being told I receive the second pair half price plus another 10% because I renewed my hearing add Warranty .So having just walked in for a Quick Look 40min later walked out very happy with eye test and two new pairs of glasses.
I can Thoroughly recommend the staff and service at the Colchester branch .
