In 1914 the history of GANT began when Bernard Gantmacher moved from the Ukraine to New York and started work in the garment district, sewing shirt collars. He soon met his wife, and the couple moved to New Haven in Connecticut. Bernard eventually started making shirts for other labels, and became highly skilled at this. He then went on to label his shirts with a diamond ‘G’ and suddenly everyone wanted the ‘G-shirt’.

It wasn’t until 1949 in which the label ‘GANT’ was established, when Bernard’s two sons returned home from active duty in World War 2 and joined the family business. The sons went on to launch their own label, GANT of New Haven. The GANT shirt was very successful and went down in fashion history as the first American clothing company to introduce the button-down collar, a style originally from England.

GANT started with a shirt and is now a global lifestyle brand with 600 stores in over 60 countries, featuring a full clothing range for men, women and children, fragrances, accessories, footwear, home wear and eyewear.
