Community Hero honours for Fleetwood community gem

A Fleetwood resident has been recognised for her daily acts of kindness with a special award.
Joan Houston, 83, is the latest recipient of Scrivens Opticians & Hearing Care’s Community Hero Award. She was presented with the honour by the company’s Fleetwood branch team on Lord Street, along with a bouquet of flowers.
A loyal branch customer for more than 15 years, Joan has become a much-loved presence thanks to her warmth, kindness and genuine interest in others.
At 83, Joan remains a familiar sight in the town centre, often popping into the branch to ask after each member of the team and brighten their day with a thoughtful sweet treat. Her caring nature extends beyond the branch, as she supports her family whenever they need her, including preparing meals for her brother, Derek, aged 84, who lives locally.
A devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Joan was married to her late husband, John, for 63 years and continues to embody his lust for life and generosity, which this award celebrates.
Branch Manager Jenna O’Neill said: “For more than 15 years, Joan has been part of the Fleetwood branch community and we’re honoured to recognise her for the kindness she shows to everyone around her. She never fails to lift our spirits when she visits, always arriving with a smile and ready for a much-welcomed chat. Joan reminds us all that community spirit is built on small, meaningful acts.”
Commenting on her Scrivens Community Hero Award, Joan said: “Winning this award has really brightened my life, especially after some difficult days since losing my wonderful husband, John. It’s such a lovely thing to happen and the Fleetwood Scrivens team truly made me feel like a queen! I’ve always enjoyed popping into the branch for a catch-up and a chat. They’ve always been so helpful, especially with my hearing aids lately and I’m really enjoying the benefits of bringing back the sounds and conversations I love!
