A creative eight-year-old has her eyes on the prize after winning a competition to design a pair of glasses inspired by the wonders of outer space.
Eva Holmes-Gobeyn was presented with a fun model of her design, a space rocket soft toy and a £50 toy shop voucher at Scrivens Opticians & Hearing Care’s Wolverhampton branch on Dudley Street.
Youngsters were encouraged to look to the skies for inspiration and submit out-of-this-world designs celebrating planets, stars, rockets and the wonders of the universe. The competition also highlighted how spending time outdoors can help protect children’s eye health by reducing the risk of developing myopia (short-sightedness). All proceeds from the £1 entry fee went to Alzheimer’s Society.

Nish, Branch Manager, said: “This competition was a fun way to encourage children to let their imaginations take off and create wonderful, spec-tacular space-themed designs, while supporting our chosen charity, Alzheimer’s Society. Ava created a brilliantly imaginative pair of specs and is a very worthy winner.
“Myopia is becoming increasingly common among children, with research indicating that increased screen time and insufficient time outdoors are contributing factors. Our Design a Spec competition highlights the importance of regular eye tests and an active lifestyle in helping to protect children’s developing eyes.”
Eva’s mum, Helen Holmes-Gobeyn, commented: “We were in the branch for Eva’s foster sister Rosie’s eye test when we spotted the competition and it immediately caught her imagination. She loves colouring, making things and getting creative, so she was excited to start working on her colourful, cosmic design.
“Eva has always loved anything miniature, so seeing her detailed design turned into a pair of specs made the competition feel especially suited to her. We’re absolutely delighted that she won, and Eva is incredibly proud to see her idea brought to life. It has been a lovely experience for her from start to finish.”
