Scarlett has a winning eye for out-of-this-world specs – again

A creative 10-year-old has her eyes on the prize once again after winning a competition to design a pair of glasses inspired by the wonders of outer space, having also taken the Scrivens Design a Spec title in 2024.

Scarlett was presented with a fun model of her latest design, a space rocket soft toy and a £50 toy shop voucher at Scrivens Opticians & Hearing Care’s Chapel en le Frith branch on Market Street.

Youngsters were encouraged to look to the skies for inspiration and submit out-of-this-world designs celebrating planets, stars, rockets and the wonders of the universe. The competition also highlighted how spending time outdoors can help protect children’s eye health by reducing the risk of developing myopia (short-sightedness). All proceeds from the £1 entry fee went to Alzheimer’s Society.

Helen Bamforth, Branch Manager, said: “This competition was a fun way to encourage children to let their imaginations take off and create wonderful, spec-tacular space-themed designs, while supporting our chosen charity, Alzheimer’s Society. Scarlett created a brilliantly imaginative pair of specs and once again proved herself to be a very worthy winner.

“Myopia is becoming increasingly common among children, with research indicating that increased screen time and insufficient time outdoors are contributing factors. Our Design a Spec competition highlights the importance of regular eye tests and an active lifestyle in helping to protect children’s developing eyes.”

Scarlett’s mum, Sarah Devlin, commented: “We’ve been bringing Scarlett to Scrivens for her annual eye test since she was seven, and the team always gives her plenty of time to choose the perfect glasses. She was so happy to win the competition two years ago that she wanted to enter again, this time with an outer space-themed design. Scarlett loves colouring and being creative, so she got straight to work on her colourful, cosmic entry. We’re delighted that she has won again, and she is so proud to see another of her ideas brought to life!”
