Today, Thursday 12 October, is World Sight Day, the annual day of awareness to focus global attention on blindness and vision impairment.
On a more personal scale it provides a timely reminder of the need for all of us to take better care of our eyes and to have regular eye tests.
It is clear to see why improved vision without the need for spectacles is so attractive, but we also need to focus on the rules of their use, especially when it comes to hygiene. Any complacency on this score can lead to infections and sore eyes.
A simple and inexpensive way to treat severe dry eye conditions by using a drop of blood is being trialled at London’s Moorfields Eye Hospital. It is based on the fact that blood contains many of the same natural nutrients found in tears, which help to keep our eyes lubricated and nourished.
Remember being advised as children to ‘eat your greens’ because they’re good for you?
Well autumn’s harvest of seasonal produce is a feast for the eyes that can help to maintain not only our general well-being but healthy eyes too.
Images of excited or apprehensive students finding out their A-level results are a sight to behold.
These young people know it is a significant milestone and one that provides options for their future.
Hollywood isn’t noted for featuring lead characters with hearing impairment so let’s have a shout out for hit movie Baby Driver.
Sport is a winner all year round when it comes to staying fit and healthy and summer especially is a tempting time to brush up those sporting skills.
Whether it’s tennis, golf, cycling or a kickabout on the beach, it’s a great excuse to get outdoors and enjoy the longer days and holiday season.
Who can tell what the great British weather has in store for us this summer.
As June’s heatwave showed, temperatures can rocket, so should that blazing sun return then be prepared to Slip, Slop, Seek.
When the sun is out many of us will naturally grab our hat, shades and suncream to enjoy the bright days of summer.
But when the sun causes glare which dazzles and strains your vision, say if you are driving, playing sport or relaxing by the pool, it is less appealing and can be dangerous too if you are at the wheel of a car.
