A retired employee and loyal customer was chosen to officially launch the new branch of a Sheffield opticians.
Hilary Thompson, aged 76, performed the honours at Scrivens Opticians & Hearing Care at Orchard Square Shopping Centre and was presented with a gift voucher and bouquet of flowers as a thank you.
The former dispensing assistant, who retired at 60 and continued her links to the branch as a customer, said: “It was very much a surprise and I was happy to do it. I was born about the same time as Scrivens was founded and like me they have gone from strength to strength!
“As a spectacle wearer for many years you have to rely on the expertise of someone who is well trained and I trust Scrivens. Spectacles are a fashion accessory too and there is a great choice of frames these days. I think people should look their best and be able to see the best.”
Hilary lives in Sheffield and has two grandchildren. She spent her working life in the optical industry starting at the age of 17. In 1974 she joined Chadburns opticians which later became part of Scrivens.
Branch manager Rita Skellett said: “Hilary is a lovely lady who was a popular member of staff. We are pleased she has entrusted her eye care to us for a long time and we thought it would be fitting if she launched our new branch.”
The branch moved from Leopold Street to its new premises which boast new sight test rooms with the latest digital eye examination equipment. It also offers a full hearing care service.
Opening offers, including a £10 eye test and up to 50% off frames, will also celebrate the launch.
Scrivens Opticians & Hearing Care was established in 1938 and has 178 stores in England and Wales, with 1,000 employees.
