Fundraising for Alzheimer’s 2019 – bike rides and big jumps!
Post on 18th December 2019
We know our staff are amazing – they’re friendly, knowledgeable and know eye and hearing care inside out!
That doesn’t mean they can’t surprise us though, below are a few stories from the last 12 months about members of our team who have gone above and beyond their day jobs, and taken on personal challenges, to fundraise for our charity partner Alzheimer’s Society. There’s everything from a 24-hour hike to a 10,000ft jump!
EMMA TOOK A LEAP OF FAITH!
Emma Fawcett, Hearing Aid Audiologist from our Rugby branch, braved an incredible 10,000ft jump, free falling at over 120mph! She raised an impressive £640 from her death-defying leap, as well as losing 6 stone 9.5lb in order to take part in the tandem skydive.
Congratulations on such a scary fundraising feat!
MARTIN BIKED 100 MILES!
Martin Elwell, Marketing Manager at Scrivens House, took on The Vélo Birmingham & Midlands – a 100-mile cycling challenge! Martin, a keen cyclist who regularly rides from his home to Scrivens House, was up for the test of strength and will – he just had to make sure he left himself enough energy to cycle home after!
Martin raised a brilliant £400 for the charity and you’ll be glad to know he rode home after finishing in an impressive 6 hours 24 minutes.
PETER WENT THE DISTANCE!
Peter Fell, Optical Lab Technician from Mersona (our spectacle manufacturing lab), took on a very challenging 105-mile charity cycle ride in memory of his grandfather, Cecil Fell. The ride takes cyclists from Wolverhampton to Aberdovey, through a demanding route. Peter finished in a fantastic 8 hours 51 minutes, even with a strained knee ligament!
Raising an impressive amount for the charity, over £900 in total, we just wanted to say congratulations for completing an already challenging ride with an injury!
MARTIN WENT ON A 24-HOUR FAMILY HIKE!
Contact Lens Optician, Martin Lea, who’s worked at many of our branches (including Alsager), completed the biggest physical challenge of his life when he, his son and his daughter took on the tough 50-mile Longmynd Hike through the Shropshire Hills – which must be completed within 24 hours!
Martin raised an amazing £520 for Alzheimer’s Society, more than double his £250 target. Huge congratulations to Martin and his family for taking on this challenge!
JANE TOOK ON A TREK!
Jane Tibbitts, an Administrative Assistant from Mersona (our spectacle manufacturing lab), took part in the Trek26 Stonehenge event inspired by her mother Iris. Even though views are fantastic and you get to walk past historical landmarks (including the world-famous stone circle of Stonehenge), the course is still tough one! Jane finished in a commendable 9 hours 41 minutes has raised over £400, exceeding her target of £300.
Congratulations to Jane and we hope you enjoyed your celebratory pizza and prosecco at the finish – it was very well deserved!
