A Fakenham pensioner stepped into the spotlight when he was chosen to officially open a newly relaunched opticians in the town.
Tony Gent, age 85, performed the honours at Scrivens Opticians & Hearing Care, at the newly refurbished unit on Norwich Street. He received a gift to mark the occasion and in recognition of his loyal customs and contributions to the local leisure industry.
The updated store features the latest digital eye examination equipment, including an OCT (optical coherence tomography) scanner. Customers can also choose from an updated range of frames, including a larger selection of the latest designer names.
Branch manager Harriet Boddy said: “We have invested in the store and wanted to mark its upgrade and in style. Tony has entrusted his hearing care to us for over 15 years, and his loyalty means a lot to the team. He’s always smiling when he visits us, and we love to welcome him for a chat when he’s in town. He’s a Gent by name and a true gent by nature – we’re so grateful to know him!”
A former farmer until the age of 50, Tony became the owner of The Old Brick Kilns, an award-winning holiday park in Fakenham named the best caravan park in England in 1989. Following his success, he and his wife, Tessa, expanded by purchasing the house next door and three self-catering cottages, further enhancing the local tourism offering.
Tony retired in 2004, and he and his wife, Tessa, have travelled to destinations such as China and Canada. He remains active in the leisure industry, offering business consultancy to fellow park owners. His extensive knowledge and experience continue to support and guide the next generation of leisure and tourism professionals.
Tony was thrilled to be asked to reveal the store’s new look. “Being part of the celebrations has been fantastic, and it’s been great to take a look around the newly updated branch.
“My wife Tessa and I have been going to Scrivens for my hearing care for many years, and the service I receive is always second to none. That’s why I recommend them to everyone.
“The team are so knowledgeable and always make us feel very welcome – when I’m in town, I often pop in for a chat. I wish Harriet and the team all the best for the reopening and continued success!”
